Film: Gil Scott-Heron x The Revolution ... (Documentary)

Ending the week on a somber note, the documentary shown after the jump was dug from the archives of BBC which originally aired in 1996. Gil-Scott Heron was more than just a poet of spoken word during the 1970-1980, he wrote a collective of collaborative soul, jazz and blues pieces with musician Brian Jackson. Jackson made the music, while Heron delivered the words that touched many, with content concerning social and political issues during the '70s.

Gil Scott-Heron's melismatic groove ushered in genres such as Hip Hop and Neo-Soul during the late '70s, earning the title as "The Godfather of Hip Hop." Acknowledged for critically acclaimed piece "The Revolution Shall Not Be Televised," a poem and song recorded for his album Small Talk on 125th and Lenox (1970). Gil remained vocal up into his recent passing, releasing his thirteenth studio album in 2010 entitled I'm New Here.

I felt the education of Gil Scott-Heron was quite fitting for the ocassion, before watching the hour long documentary, which is featured after the jump. Although Gil's gone, his words will not go to rest. Rest in Plush Gil.
