Hip Hop: The Dime x
Brickyard Cove (Review)

While there is a scene of young artists emerging from The Bay Area as a part of the “New Bay Movement” Richmond natives Chioke Jelani (aka Chi) and K.nightshift , better known as The Dime, has chosen to stick with the styles of the Old West. Their debut LP Brickyard Cove (Now Available on iTunes) is named after an affluent area on the coast of Richmond that is tucked away from the infamous ills of the city. On the album The Dime, whose name is an acronym for “Desire Is Multiplied Everyday” weaves their everyman rhymes through mid-tempo neck snapping beats to convey the conflicts of men striving to make it out of the hood and into a safe haven. Although there are several songs about women, parties and a couple of well played drug metaphors at the end of the day The Dime is still able to display maturity through their lyrics which manage to stay away from being over the top. Their format may lead to comparisons with Mobb Deep although Chi’s baritone has already lead to several comparisons to rap legend Scarface while K.nightshift compliments the likes of Sonny Cheeba of Camp Lo.

Choice cuts on Brickyard Cove include “The Come Up”, “Euthanasia” and “Big 6 To The Board”.
