Music : Def Jam's Rick Rubin Announces Star Wars-Inspired Album
W hat does Star Wars and Electronic music have in common? That may be the question for many but for legendary producer Rick Rubin, they are one in the same. Recently announcing a new EDM compilation called Star Wars Headspace, Rubin called on Flying Lotus, Rustie, Röyksopp, J.J. Abrams, Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda, and himself to contribute music to the project.
Star Wars Headspace, is complimentary piece for last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The project comprises of a handful of producers creating music inspired from the Star Wars series, utilizing the film's sonic portfolio. The rules were simple. Star Wars allowed the collective to use any original sound or noise from franchise but could not tamper with original composition from John Williams.
Zane Lowe premiered a few of the release's tracks on his Beats 1 radio show, which can be stream below. The tracks included Flying Lotus' "R2 Where R U?", Baauer's "Cantina Boys" and Rick Rubin's "NR-G7," all featuring samples from R2-D2, C-3P0, the Cantina and Darth Vader.
While Zane promised to feature tracks throughout the week on his Beats 1 radio show, both digital and physical releases of Star Wars Headspace are on the way.
